The General direction for the Arts (DGARTES) is supporting in 2021 nineteen artistic projects, within the scope of the Art and Mental Health Program. This program aims to create synergies, through the arts, that contribute to overcome the challenges currently faced by the mental health area in Portugal. One of the chosen projects is hosted by Prisma. Every first Sunday of the month, Prisma runs the OFICINA de ARTE.
OFICINA ARTE invites artists and people who suffer from anxiety, depression, addiction or any other mental health issue to participate in these free sessions monitored by an art therapist.
The goal of this sessions is to use art therapy as a form of social inclusion: encourage the creative eye, curiosity, cultivate the imagination, educate in matters of culture and sustainability while fighting discrimination and the stigmas associated with the mental health area. Prisma is being adapted for these sessions to the needs of users – offering drawing, sculpturing and writing materials, so the participants can create their imagery without a filter. OFICINA de ARTE is offering time, care, training, leisure and comfort.
The purposes of the project are:
• Offer free art therapy sessions for the members of the Prisma association.
• Offer free materials so that participants can create without limitations.
• Offer a space to educate in the sense of art and creation.
• Conclusion of the OFICINA de ARTE with a final presentation with all participants invited.
• Encourage cultural exchange.
The art therapy session itself has no costs for the participants – all materials are provided. To participate in a session a membership of the association is required. It’s possible to become a member on the day of the art therapy session. The membership for the association for the year 2021 costs 5 EUR.
